Hope- It Starts Here

Born fragile and weighing only 1 pound, 15 ounces, about the weight of 3 medium sized bananas, Elias was born at 27 weeks old. Although excited to have her baby boy, his mother Natasha never imagined he would be here so soon and knew that because of his very early arrival Elias was at high risk for one or more medical complications. This tiny baby boy had to spend over 2 months at the NICU before he could come home to his family still underdeveloped.
At three months old, he was the developmental age of a newborn. He was so weak that he could not lift his head. While Elias was in the NICU he also suffered acid reflux, which required him to be placed on his side causing a twist in his neck that prevented him from turning his neck easily.
The hospital immediately referred the family to our Babies Can’t Wait program knowing that our early intervention and physical therapy services were Elias’s best chance. In three weeks with our therapist he was able to grasp his toys, a big deal for a baby who at first couldn’t even hold his rattle. At 7 months old, Elias rolled over. Remembering this huge milestone still brings tears to his mom’s eyes. Having made such great strides, at 14-months-old Elias’s therapies moved from once a week to once every other week. Still working toward some very big milestones his family and therapists started working on standing independently and getting him ready to walk. Although the Cloers take it just one day at a time, they are very excited to see Elias go from a fragile baby who couldn’t lift his head to one that can walk and accomplish so much more. The early intervention therapies from ESNG’s Babies Can’t Wait program help so many like baby Elias and his family overcome obstacles and look to the future with hope.
